Chris Doogan is an artist living in Park Slope, Brooklyn with a studio in the Gowanus Canal area. A self-taught printmaker, Chris works primarily in woodcut and linocut block printing. His images are influenced by the tradition of the narrative works of the 1930’s WPA era and the urban environment of New York City. Chris has had several solo shows and been in numerous group shows, he is also the founder of the Gowanus artists open studio tour and a new member of Artspswt.

“My aim is to depict, people, places and objects as symbolic of a time and place. Woodcut and Linocut block prints have a long history of communication and social commentary; they have a starkness, simplicity and strength. I particularly enjoy the translation of a sketch into a block print imbuing it with as much energy and movement as I can. The process of cutting the block makes me examine each line and shape for its significance and weight. Patterns become very important in creating volumes and visual interest, contributing more details to the story of the art work.” - Chris Doogan
