Artist’s Statement

I paint landscapes in oils, both in Vermont and in Brooklyn, New York.  My goal in painting is always to capture the light.  Light reveals the fleeting moment that transforms the ordinary world into a more intense reality and imbues the landscape with feeling.  Light in painting expresses my love for the land and our earth.

As I walk the streets and roads around my homes in Vermont and Brooklyn in all seasons and weathers, I see dazzling sunlight on water in early morning, thin diffuse light through a snowstorm, deep shadows in late summer, and I seek to convey the essence of these and other scenes in color, shape, and line. I work to achieve two transformations: to turn flat canvas into deep space, and to turn heavy paint into insubstantial light and air.

I have painted in oils for many years and have studied painting at the Art Students League and The School of Visual Arts in New York City.  For many decades I have maintained a rural/urban life, now spending equal portions of the year in Rochester, Vermont and in Park Slope, Brooklyn.
